The new EP from Surmachina continues to experiment with sound, reimagining the legendary “Way from the Varangians to the Greeks”.
The release “Онега” (Onega) mixes hip-hop experimental beats, electronics and authentic instruments. In particular: recordings of Solovetsky choir, Bulgarian and Pomeranian tunes, sampled Scandinavian taglharpa (bowed instrument) and Carpathian kalyuka (flute). The bass lines are played on a Dreadbox Typhon analog synthesizer assembled in Greece. On the mini-album there is a place both for old Russian melancholy and ritual dance tunes.
